Bops Graduation!

Posted June 14, 2016

If you’re anything like us, you’ve gotten gotten a ton of graduation cards in the mail this past spring…  Heck, I didn’t even realize I knew this many people in general, much less graduating.  As I opened my email the other day, I received a graduation card that brought a smile to my face.  It was a photo of the 2015-2016 graduating class from our Bops Sewing Program in Rajahmundry, India.

Unlike here in the states, where every single person has the opportunity to attend college or a trade school, that is not the case for these ladies.  Most have grown up in very poor conditions and work days upon days in the fields just to be able to put food on the table for their children.  And more times than not, it’s still not enough. You see, most of these ladies are widowed or their husbands abandoned them.  Many of them are orphans and have been left to care for their younger siblings.  Learning a trade is not a right, or a privilege there.  To these ladies, it’s almost a miracle.
Just because they are in the Bops Sewing Program, doesn’t mean that life stops for them…  Their days are still spent working in the fields, taking care of their children, and attending the sewing program. By joining our program, they give up two days a week that could be spent in the fields working. It’s a big opportunity for them, but also a tremendous sacrifice. They travel from miles around, often times without food for the entire day. These women are tenacious! Do you see why this is one of my favorite graduation photos?
Upon completion of the program, each lady is given a sewing machine so that she may sew to provide a living for her family.  In this group of women, three ladies have expressed their desire to open their own shop.
Our hearts are full.  Thank you for supporting this group of women.  If it were not for you purchasing their handmade goods, or any of our other Bops products, these ladies wouldn’t have this opportunity..
Each sewing machine is $100.  If you would like to sponsor a sewing student for the upcoming 2016-2017 year, please email
